The Nursery is Ready and Waiting

May 30, 2008

I am very excited!  The new baby chicks come today!  I have their nursery ready and waiting.  Nurseries for baby birds are called ‘brooders’.
Brooders need to be sanitary, water-proof and draft proof and easy to clean. The heat lamp needs to be red, to cut down on the chicks from pecking on each other.

New Corn

May 30, 2008

The corn is growing!  A corn plant will fully expand about every three days during early stages of growth.  As the days get warmer then growth accelerates to two days. Two leaves appear about the same time, creating a collar effect.

We now have acres of corn, rowing out!

Pheasant Damage

May 30, 2008

The pheasants LOVE to eat corn seed.  They scratch up the growing seed and have a feast.
Something must have frightened the pheasant off, for it forgot to eat this seed.

Baby Alfalfa

The tiny little seeds are growing and doing well!  By this time next year the plants will look like they have been growing there forever.

Great Saddness

May 29, 2008

I am so sad!  My last chicken was attacked and killed by another skunk! What a horrible ending to a really nice chicken!
We have sat traps and sent three skunks, so far, to skunk heaven, I hope that is all.
We have to get rid of these predators as the new babies are coming Friday!

Well, if you never get here, the following photos will let you see the great little canyon, called Fat Man’s Misery, about 5 miles from our farm.

Most of the cactus had pink or yellow flowers, but this one was a great red.

Resting in the Sun

May 28, 2008

Terry walked down Fat Man’s and onto Devil’s Kitchen with everyone, while Tallin and I stayed on top.  Our time was so peaceful that Tallin fell asleep.
Terry came back early and took over ‘resting on the rock’ so I could take some photos.

Bladen is holding one of the lizards which makes it’s home in the canyon.

The Next Day We Went to Fat Man’s Misery

May 28, 2008

Fat Man’s Misery is a classic adventure just on BLM land. Getting to the canyon and escaping back to your car requires some walking – but the Misery isn’t too technically difficult.   The canyon ends in the beautiful Devil’s Kitchen full of wild life and lovely canyon flowers.
