Ice Climbing in Ouray, Colorado

For my birthday Terry and I went to Ouray for dipping and to watch the ice climbers.

The Ouray Ice Park is a 2 mile long stretch of the Uncompaghre Gorge that has been designated for public ice climbing.   http://www.ourayicepark.com/

It was pretty amazing to watch those fearless people

but I enjoyed ‘dipping’ in the hot springs pool more.  Once in the water you can float looking up at this mountain.

  1. I totally want to go for a dip too! Very envious of that b-day gift. Under NO circumstances would I ever be found to be purposely hanging off an ice wall.

  12. I think I would chose the dipping over ice climbing too. I don’t do heights very well but I love hot water!

  17. That looks like the outside of my windows…all that ice!

  18. My brother does that. He’s crazy too.

  19. What a fun birthday outing!!!

Those ice climbers are crazy tho!!! I’m not sure I could watch them! I’d probably have to peek through my fingers!!

Its fun to put pictures with the conversations we’ve had! So fun.

  20. Yes, count me in for dipping – we’ll leave the ice for everyone else, because we’re generous like that! :)

  21. Looks amazing! But those are some crazy people!

  22. Great pictures! And Happy Birthday!
The dipping part sounds good to me… but I’d have to pass on the climbing of iceicles!

  23. Fun BD present. We have been there when camping and visited the box canyon waterfall (I think that is the name). It is so amazing to be in that tight spot with all that noise and in the summer the ice cold spray feels good. have you been to that?

  24. What amazing scenery and what a bunch of NUTS! I hope you had a happy birthday. Looks like it was a beautiful day.

  25. I wanna come next time!

    Happy Birthday!

  26. Aren’t those climbers crazy?! We watched them on our honeymoon and saw a huge chunk of ice fall. They yelled a warning and they all pulled in close to the ice, then kept on climbing. Fun to watch though! And I agree with the swimming…much more relaxing!

  27. Wow! What a strange coincidence! I just read an article about this sport in Ouray in my Adventure magazine. I’d never heard of it before. Great photos!
