Step Two of Our Western Colorado Farming
If you are opening up corn ground or tearing up an old hay field, all the farmers in our area plow.
I know that plowing is a dying process back east, but we have heavy clay soil and must plow.
So after disking we Terry plows

BUT if a farmer is going from a former bean field he can rip the field open because of how the beans grow causing a much loamier field.

Terry plowed all the old corn fields, and today he is ripping the old bean field.
I’m really glad he has retired, before all of this would have taken place after 7 at night and before 6 in the morning. Now, while I am at work, he is at work “playing” in his fields.

That’s really interesting. I’m glad he’s retired too. Mountain Man does work on building other people’s houses but the hours the farm takes are backbreaking. It’s definitely a full time job. I enjoyed your photos.

I can only imagine how busy Terry and you were raising a family, both working off the farm, and then farming at night. Bet this retirement is a huge blessing in alot of ways!!
How is Terry adjusting to being able to farm during the day hours???

We’ve heavy clay too….so plow we do. It’s amazing how fast those plows get shiny after a day in the field.

Nice shiney plows, it must make it easier to get things done and now see him in the evening being retired… Good for you, guys, enjoy… I still see alot of plowing going on around here in my area, a few no till but not many…

It is great to see that you are on the land. That time is a few weeks away here still.

Give him something to do. JR would love to just plow, plant, and grow stuff. Poor man, I make him work.

Work play, or play work…that is funny. When hubby is spending the day off messing with cars, I tell him it is not really work because he LIKES to do that. Not sure he believes me (o:

The work is never done, is it?

Looks like lots of hard work! Yay for farmers!

Another thing they don’t do out here in the east…irrigate. I still can’t get over the fact that when you see a field, there are no ditches or sprinklers or anything. Just rain and humidity. But there is just nothing like Olathe sweet corn, is there?
